How does Essentiale work?

Essentiale contains 300 mg of essential phospholipids (EPLs) that work by replacing and regenerating the phospholipids in our liver cell membranes which are damaged by unhealthy lifestyle of eating fatty foods and drinking too much alcohol or by intake of too much medication or by infection from certain viruses.

Pharmaceutical action

Phospholipids are essential structural components of all cellular membranes. Essential phospholipids (EPL substance -- an active ingredient in Essentiale medications) is a complex of substances of natural origin (ethers of cholinephosphoric acid (phosphatidylcholine) and unsaturated fatty acids (linoleic, linolenic, olein). Essentiale medications possess membranotropic properties, exert metabolic and hepatoprotective action, and regulate lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Essential phospholipids increase the functional status of the liver.

Intervening in the disturbance of the liver's metabolism, Essential phospholipids enter the cell membrane and combine with the endogenous phospholipids. Essential phospholipids improve the patient's clinical status and the liver's lab indices.

Combination of Essentiale with cordiamin (nikethamide) and vitamin E (50 mg/kg for 35 days) considerably activates the mono-oxygenase, glucoro- and glutathione transferase systems of the liver, resulting in the free-radical processes becoming less intense.

The spectrum of Essential phospholipids' activity in chronic degenerative liver diseases is illustrated by the following properties:

    •    recovery and maintaining the consistency of the hepatocytes;

    •    activation of the phospholipid-depending ferments;

    •    improvement in the lipids' metabolism caused by accelerated synthesis of lipoproteins in the liver;

    •    activation of RNA synthesis and as a result the normalization of protein metabolism;

    •    increased synthesis of glycogen in the liver;

    •    improvement in the detoxification function of the liver;

    •    the conversion of neutral fats and cholesterol into easily metabolized forms;

    •    decreased fatty infiltration of the hepatocytes.

Essentiale is used to treat the following diseases:

    •    Hepatitis (acute and chronic), toxic hepatitis, medicinal and alcoholic hepatitis, poisonings;

    •    Hepatic steatosis of different aetiology (in 53.6% of patients, the effect of a six-month treatment with Essentiale forte was very good, showing improvement of all investigated parameters);

ESSENTIALE FORTE N - Capsules N30 or N100. One capsule contains essential phospholipids (EPL substance) 300 mg.

ESSENTIALE N - solution for intravenous injection in vials 5 ml. Essentiale N contains essential phospholipids (EPL substance) 250 mg.

ESSENTIALE FORTE - capsules N50. Essentiale forte contains essential phospholipids (EPL substance) 300 mg, Thiamine mono nitrate (Vitamin B1) 6 mg, Riboflavine (Vitamiin B2) 6 mg, Pyridoxine chidrochloride 6 mg (Vitamin B6), Cyanocobolamine 0.06 mg (Vitamin B12), Nicotinamide 30 mg, Tocopherole acetate 6 mg (Vitamin E).

Contradiction and cautions

Do not use Essentiale in hypersensitivity or allergy to any ingredients of the preparation. The application of Essentiale in newborn children is not safe. During pregnancy women are recommended to consult their health care provider prior to taking Essentiale.[medical citation needed]

Side effects

In very rare cases it can cause: abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and allergic reaction (skin rash).

The active ingredient in the so-called essential phospholipids (EPL-substance), which are highly purified fraction of phosphatidylcholine. The defining component of this fraction is дилинолеоилфосфатидилхолин. Essential phospholipids on their chemical structure similar to endogenous membrane phospholipids, exceeding them by their functional properties due to the high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid. Phospholipids are the basic building blocks of cell membranes and organel. They are involved in differentiation, division and cell regeneration.

Functional significance of phospholipids based on their amphiphilic properties, which allow you to adjust the permeability of cell membranes. They improve the function of membranes, in particular ion exchange, the process of intracellular respiration and biological oxidation, affect the binding of intracellular respiratory enzymes in mitochondria, as well as on the process of oxidative phosphorylation to energy metabolism of cells. Under physiological conditions, the synthesis of phospholipids meet the normal requirements of hepatocytes, which contain a sufficient amount of phospholipids. It is known that the structure of cell membranes and function of enzyme systems in liver diseases are violated. Disrupted the biosynthesis of phospholipids, the shortage of which leads to dysfunction of the cell membrane. These processes are especially pronounced in mitochondria, which are about 30% composed of phospholipids and which carry out important metabolic processes, including oxidative phosphorylation. With a deficit of phospholipids is disturbed fat metabolism, which leads to fatty liver. Due to its pharmacological properties Essentiale eliminates these disturbances, regeneration of cell membranes, activates the broken membrane-bound enzyme systems and receptors, increases the ability of the liver detoxification, and thus normalizes its function.


Pharmacokinetics
The half-life for the choline component is 66 hours, for saturated fatty acids - 32 hours.
In studies on pharmacokinetics in humans of less than 5% of each of the introduced isotopes 3H and 14C were allocated in the faeces.


Indications:
Fatty degeneration of the liver (as in diabetes), acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, necrosis of liver cells, hepatic coma and precoma, toxic liver damage, including toxaemia of pregnancy, pre-and postoperative treatment, particularly in operations in the area of hepatobiliary zone, psoriasis and neurodermatitis ; radiation syndrome.


How to use:
Capsules
In the absence of any other doctor's recommendations, the initial dose: 2 capsules 3 times a day, maintenance dose: 1 capsule 3 times a day. Take the capsules during a meal, without chewing, drinking a little water.


Intravenous injection
